Sip into Summer:
Alaska's Take on the Hugo Spritz & More Refreshing Cocktails

In 2023, the Aperol Spritz was my summer drink, but this year, I’m all about the floral Hugo Spritz taking center stage.

While traveling in North Tyrol and Venice, Italy, I discovered the Hugo Spritz, and it was love at first sip! Created in 2005 by bartender Roland Gruber at San Zeno Bar in Naturno, the Hugo Spritz was Gruber’s alternative to the popular Aperol Spritz (a favorite while trekking through Prague). Although lesser known in the States, the Hugo is an Italian standard held in the same regard as its bitter, orange cousin in its home country and across Europe.

Hugo’s key component is elderflower liqueur, traditionally made by locals in the Dolomite region of the Alps. The cocktail’s popularity took off in 2007 with the introduction of a popular elderflower liqueur, spreading its fame from Austria and Germany to the rest of the world.

What is a Hugo Spritz? The Hugo Spritz is a refreshingly floral cocktail, typically made with three parts sparkling wine, two parts soda water, and one part elderflower liqueur or cordial. It’s served in a traditional wine glass with Prosecco, soda water, elderflower liqueur, and mint. A citrus garnish is also usually added.

How is a Hugo Spritz different from an Aperol Spritz? Like the beloved Aperol Spritz, the Hugo is made with Prosecco and soda water, using elderflower liqueur instead of Aperol. It offers a sweeter and slightly botanical flavor, complementing the Prosecco’s floral and citrusy notes. Adding cooling mint (after muddling the leaves to express the oils) makes this the perfect summer thirst-quencher.

When would I serve a Hugo Spritz? The Hugo is perfect for Alaska’s summer gatherings. It’s simple and elegant, making it ideal for sipping all day at a laid-back barbecue or outdoor party. With its refreshing taste, it pairs beautifully with Alaska favorites like grilled salmon and halibut, making it a hit at any event. Whether you’re hosting a family get-together or a celebratory bash, the Hugo Spritz is sure to impress your guests.

The spritz is simple to make and endlessly customizable. If you’re entertaining this summer, shop at Scan Home Furniture for the perfect dining and entertaining furniture to make your gatherings unforgettable. Cheers, Alaska!
